We are approximately 4 km from the A1 motorway exit, in Umbria, the green heart of Italy, in Sferracavallo, about one kilometre from the hillside on which Orvieto’s medieval quarter stands.

The origins of the name Sferracavallo
Before cars existed, when people travelled by carriage or on horseback, an inn known as “Albergo La Nona” stood along this road. Its name referred to the ninth and final stop before the steep climb towards Orvieto.
Carriages and lone riders stopped here to eat, rest and spend the night. It was also the place where horses had their shoes removed and fitted again, allowing them to set off the following morning and tackle the climb towards the town more safely. This old custom is believed to have given rise to the name Sferracavallo, now a neighbourhood at the foot of the Rupe of Orvieto.

By car
From northern Italy: take the A1 Autostrada del Sole towards Rome, exit at Orvieto and continue towards Orvieto town centre.
From southern Italy: take the A1 Autostrada del Sole towards Florence, exit at Orvieto and continue towards Orvieto town centre.
The B&B is approximately 4 km from the Orvieto motorway exit.
- Leave the motorway at the Orvieto exit.
- Continue along the SS 205 towards Orvieto.
- At the roundabout, after approximately 1 km, take the SS 71 towards Viterbo.
- After approximately 3 km, at the Viterbo–Orvieto junction, continue straight along the SP 43 towards Sferracavallo.
- Once you enter Via Arno, continue for approximately 500 metres. The B&B is on the right at number 37/A.
By train
From the north: take the Milan–Rome railway line and get off at Orvieto station.
From the south: take the Rome–Milan railway line and get off at Orvieto station.
Orvieto railway station is approximately 2 km from the B&B. Guests travelling without a car can use the local Circular B bus service to reach Sferracavallo from the station or Orvieto town centre.
